BCT gains GCAA approval and secures contract with Etihad Cargo at EMA

Following its approval from the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), BCT has been appointed as the line maintenance provider for Etihad Cargo, supporting its Boeing 777F freighter flights into East Midlands Airport (EMA), which is now the leading air freight airport in the UK.

Etihad Cargo launched its twice-weekly freighter services between Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport and East Midlands Airport (EMA) last October, strengthening links between the UAE and the UK’s manufacturing and e-commerce sectors.

This latest approval authorises BCT to deliver comprehensive line maintenance support to Etihad Cargo’s scheduled freighter services into EMA, reinforcing the company’s expanding capability in supporting leading global cargo airlines. The addition of Etihad Cargo to BCT’s customer portfolio further cements the company’s position as one of the UK’s most respected providers of third-party line maintenance services.

Leading commercial aircraft MRO, BCT Aviation Maintenance , has boosted its support capability to airlines and other MROs with the addition of Ram Air Turbine (RAT) testing, certified for use on Airbus and Boeing aircraft families.

Outsourcing aircraft tool loan support to BCT gives customers faster access to critical tooling, lower capital and overhead costs, and more resilient AOG response than maintaining in‑house inventories.

Why tool loan support matters

Aircraft maintenance and AOG events are highly time‑sensitive, and delays can quickly translate into lost revenue, passenger disruption, and schedule knock‑on. BCT’s tool loan support ensures that certified, calibrated, and OEM‑approved tools are readily available, without the operator needing to own every niche item.

As well as reducing capital expenditure, so airlines avoid having to invest in rarely used or type‑specific tools, and the hangar space to store them, BCT’s ‘pay per use’ flexibility means paying for tools only when needed. It also means that operators do not need to absorb lifecycle costs of equipment, such as calibration, recertification, upgrades, and obsolescence management.

Fast deployment RAT testing with BCT’s ‘Go Team’

Because RAT activation in service is rare, a substantial portion of verification and recurring checks are carried out on the ground. BCT’s dedicated mobile RAT test rig and ‘Go Team’ is available for fast deployment to airlines and MROs.

As part of the testing process, the rig simulates the aerodynamic torque by mechanically driving the RAT input shaft at specified speeds. It measures shaft speed, torque, hydraulic pressure/flow, generator voltage/frequency, case temperature, and vibration levels during the test sequence, to ensure that RAT performance is reproduced accurately without overstressing the unit.

Typical RAT ground test sequence

Whilst the RAT location and maintenance can differ by aircraft type, ground testing follows a structured sequence.

1. Pre‑test preparation

Position the aircraft in a safe area and configure hydraulic/electrical systems per maintenance instructions, including depressurization or isolation as required.
Install the RAT ground test tool or gearbox assembly, secure mechanical interfaces, and connect the hydraulic cart or drive unit with the specified fluid, pressure, and temperature conditions.

2. Deployment and mechanical verification

Command RAT deployment using the cockpit control or maintenance panel and verify correct door opening, extension sequence, and mechanical locks or uplock release.
Inspect for interference with surrounding structure, confirm correct clearances, and check position indication and warnings on the flight deck.

3. Drive‑up and performance mapping

Run the ground drive unit at incremental speeds representing key flight conditions (e.g., approach, holding, diversion speeds) while monitoring RAT speed stability.
Record hydraulic pressure and flow or electrical voltage, current, and frequency at each test point to verify that the RAT meets minimum output required for the emergency loads.

4. System integration checks

With the RAT driven, transfer selected buses or hydraulic circuits onto RAT‑supplied power and verify continued operation of essential avionics, flight controls, and instrumentation.
Confirm correct automatic load‑shedding, bus priority logic, and fault indications if RAT output is reduced or disconnected.

5. Protective and special‑function tests

Where applicable, exercise RAT anti‑icing or de‑icing devices via the non‑rotating test shaft or electrical controls and verify power consumption and thermal performance within limits.
Check overspeed protections, brake or damping features, and emergency retraction or stow interlocks as permitted by the design.

6. Shutdown, inspection, and documentation

Reduce drive speed to zero, command system shutdown, and remove the test tooling per procedure, followed by visual inspection for leaks, damage, or abnormal wear on the RAT and mounts.
Analyse recorded data against acceptance criteria, document results in the maintenance log, and update reliability tracking as required by the operator’s continuing airworthiness programme.

Supporting major growth in UK air cargo operations

The international air cargo market is experiencing significant growth. According to IATA data, 2024 saw a record-breaking increase in demand as cargo tonne-kilometres (CTK) surged 11.3% year-on-year, with international operations up 12.2% compared to 2023. For 2025, IATA anticipates further growth of about 5.8%.

Statistics from market intelligence consultancy, Research And Markets, indicate that the global air cargo market accounted for US $131.6 billion in 2024, with growth expected at a 6.3% CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) through 2030, reaching US $190.3 billion. Despite accounting for less than 1% of global freight by volume, air cargo is responsible for around 35% of global trade value.

Unsurprisingly, the Asia-Pacific region stands out as the global air freight powerhouse. Growth here has consistently outpaced other regions, with an estimated CAGR of about 5% annually. China dominates the air cargo landscape, contributing over 20% of global freight exports by air.

Digital commerce is turbocharging this growth trend. A surge in e-commerce has contributed to a nearly 20% rise in air freight demand since 2019, and express shipments now comprise a significant chunk of total revenues, in addition to critical deliveries which constitute the backbone of air freight, such as electronics, pharmaceuticals and perishable goods, that demand speed of transport.

Zooming in on the UK, the air freight sector shows a steady upward trend. The UK air freight market was valued at approximately US $10.5 billion in 2024, with projections placing it at US $16.5 billion by 2033, supported by a CAGR of 4.5% between 2025 and 2033.

Logistics UK reports consistent year-on-year growth, with air freight demand up 11.9% and capacity expanding by 13.4% in 2024. Notably, belly hold space in passenger aircraft increased sharply, enhancing overall cargo volumes and highlighting the flexibility of UK operators.

Alongside the growth in volumes, there has been a notable shift in the air freight infrastructure. Historically, London Heathrow has been the UK’s main cargo gateway, handling about 1.54 million tonnes in 2024. However, East Midlands Airport (EMA) is now edging ahead in growth, with cargo volumes rising nearly 20% recently, compared to just 2.7% at Heathrow. In absolute terms, whilst Heathrow managed 1.6 million tonnes last year, East Midlands reached 375,000 tonnes, including 113,000 tonnes in the past quarter alone.

East Midlands’ rise is strategic, as the airport has dedicated freight operations, less congestion, lower fees, and expanding routes, particularly to China. New entrants and route expansions are reinforcing its role as the UK’s preferred express freight hub.

In response to the significant expansion in cargo operations at EMA, leading MRO service provider, BCT Aviation Maintenance , has announced two brand new line maintenance contracts at the airport. Operating two Boeing 777F aircraft, Chinese cargo carrier, Central Airlines, has appointed BCT Aviation Maintenance to manage its line maintenance support.

Similarly, African freight carrier, Ethiopian Cargo and Logistics Services, is also operating a Boeing 777F between the UK and China twice per week and BCT has signed an agreement to manage line maintenance at EMA for the airline.

The new maintenance deals have helped to reinforce BCT’s position as a major provider of line maintenance services with bases at five airports in the UK and Ireland, as well as East Midlands Airport’s status as the UK’s foremost express air freight hub.

Full winter programme sees major infrastructure investment for BCT Aviation Maintenance

Confirming its position a leading MRO based at East Midlands Airport (EMA), BCT Aviation Maintenance has made a six-figure investment in new hangar equipment and airside vehicles. This comes ahead of a full-capacity winter maintenance programme.

BCT’s Hangar facility at EMA will welcome six customer Boeing 737NG aircraft between October and December for routine annual maintenance checks, with a further six aircraft scheduled between January and March 2026.

In advance of the first aircraft’s arrival, BCT has taken delivery of new Genie platform lifts, as well as four tripod airframe jacks from HYDRO Systems GmbH & Co. KG and four new vans from Ron Brooks Motor Group . The four vehicles are Toyota Proace Icon EV vans, as part of BCT’s objective to increase the sustainability of its airside operations by utilising zero-emission vehicles.

In addition, a brand new hydraulic ground power unit and RAT (Ram Air Turbine) test rig are due to be delivered in the next few months. All of BCT’s latest equipment is available to hire on bespoke terms.

BCT Aviation Maintenance secures Boeing 777F contracts at UK’s fast expanding air freight hub

In response to the significant expansion in cargo operations at East Midlands Airport (EMA), leading MRO service provider, BCT Aviation Maintenance, has announced two brand new line maintenance contracts at the airport, where the company is headquartered.

Having recently commenced freighter flights on behalf of Chinese logistics firm, YunExpress, operating two Boeing 777F aircraft into EMA twice per week, Chinese cargo carrier, Central Airlines, has appointed BCT Aviation Maintenance to manage its line maintenance support.

Similarly, African freight carrier, Ethiopian Cargo and Logistics Services, is also operating a Boeing 777F between the UK and China twice per week over the summer and BCT has signed an agreement to manage line maintenance at EMA for the airline.

With plans to increase frequency as part of long term commitment from cargo customers, the new maintenance deals have helped to reinforce BCT’s position as a major provider of line maintenance services with bases at five airports in the UK and Ireland, as well as East Midlands Airport’s status as the UK’s foremost express air freight hub.

BCT Aviation Maintenance increases UK CAA Base Maintenance capability up to and including 48 Month Checks!

BCT Aviation Maintenance is thrilled to announce the UK CAA have granted an increase to our Base Maintenance scope of

approval up to C Check.

At our Base Maintenance Facility located at East Midlands Airport (EMA), we are now able to offer increased

capability for A320 series and B737 Series aircraft including:

· A Checks Line and Base

· 6, 12, 18, 24 and 48 month checks

· Up to 20,000 flight hour tasks

· Up to 10,000 flight cycle tasks

· Drop out tasks including Structural Inspections.

In January 2021 BCT Aviation Maintenance opened the hangar doors for business at our Base Maintenance

Facility, this was a momentous development and since then we have continued to expand and grow the services

we can offer. Over the last few years, we have been providing support to lessors and operators around the world

with lease transition, entry into service requirements and scheduled/unscheduled operational base maintenance

checks including the following services:

As of the 19th July BCT Aviation Maintenance is proudly providing SmartLynx Airlines with Line Maintenance support at our Line Station at Dublin Airport (DUB).

SmartLynx Airlines are operating at Dublin Airport (DUB) through the summer season with A320 aircraft and BCT Aviation Maintenance are extremely delighted to be able to provide full Line Maintenance support with our experienced and dedicated engineering team.

With the current climate in aviation and travel the way it is due to the Corona Virus pandemic it is very exciting to see flights increase especially as we enter the summer season. Travel increasing and more flights operating is a huge positive for the aviation industry, we are overjoyed to see SmartLynx flying at Dublin and to support them.

BCT Aviation Maintenance proudly supporting TAP Express at MAN and DUB!

Starting June 2021, BCT Aviation Maintenance is delighted to be providing Line Maintenance support for TAP Express at our Line Stations at Manchester (MAN) and Dublin (DUB) Airport.

TAP Express are operating from Manchester and Dublin to Lisbon Airport with E190 and E195 aircraft. As they visit Manchester and Dublin, BCT Aviation Maintenance will be providing departure support as the aircraft Night-Stop.

After a challenging year for the aviation industry, it's brilliant to see flights increase and we are extremely pleased to

be supporting TAP Express.

‘’In this current climate, airlines are struggling to keep their operating costs to an absolute minimum in order to combat the effects of Covid, caused by the significant reduction in passenger numbers.

The Embraer 170/190 aircraft with its lower operating costs, is becoming a much more popular choice on the Intereuropean routes, that would normally be flown by the more traditional Boeing and Airbus variants.

BCT Aviation Maintenance new Line Station open for business at Birmingham Airport!

As of March 2021, BCT Aviation Maintenance is proud to announce the opening of its newest Line Station at Birmingham International Airport (BHX).

This is an exciting move for the company as a number of our clients have expressed an interest regarding Line Maintenance support at Birmingham.

As a full EASA and FAA Repair Approved Line Station, Birmingham Line Station has the capability to support B757, ERJ 170 and ERJ 190. Along with these types we aim to expand the stations capability and are always happy to add types to meet the requirements of our clients.

BCT Aviation Maintenance Hangar 30 Base Maintenance Facility Opening January!

BCT Aviation Maintenance is thrilled to announce Hangar 30 Base Maintenance Facility will be opening in January 2021.

Located at our headquarters in East Midlands Airport (EMA), the Hangar will provide BCT Aviation Maintenance with the capability to support airlines and lessors with a wide range of Base Maintenance services up to but not including Intermediate Checks.

Our Base Maintenance capabilities will include Cabin Configurations, Scheduled Maintenance up to Airbus LMV Checks / Boeing A Check Base visits, Scheduled Engine Changes & Component Replacements, Structural Metal Repairs, Modifications Programs, AOG Support and De-registration/Registration tasks. The Aircraft Types initially approved for support at the Hangar are A320 Series, B737 CL and B737 NG.

The Hangar is an extremely exciting development for BCT Aviation Maintenance as the company continues to expand and offer more services for our customers allowing us to support them to the highest standard.

BCT Aviation Maintenance Support Brussels Airlines with Unique Bruegel Livery!

BCT Aviation Maintenance is thrilled to announce that our EMA Team had the privilege of completing Engineering Support on the stunning new Brussels Airlines Livery, The Bruegel.

This month on the 2nd May 2019 Brussels Airlines revealed the latest of their unique liveries The Bruegel (OO-SNE) as it arrived in Belgium.

This Bruegel will be the 6th aircraft to join the fleet of the Belgian Icons Brussels Airlines have created. Each of the six aircrafts are dedicated to something iconic to the world of Belgium, so far there has been The Aerosmurf, Amare, Trident, Magritte and Rackham.

Previously the Aerosmurf design was dedicated to the Belgian comic The Smurfs, The Amare to the Belgian annual Tomorrowland Festival, The Trident to the Belgian national Red Devils Football Team, The Magritte to the iconic Belgian artist Renè Magritte and The Rackham to the famous Adventures of Tintin created by Belgian artist Georges Remi.

The new Bruegel A320-200 is a tribute to the work of artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder, on the 450th Anniversary of his death. Pieter Bruegel was a famous artist of the 16th Centenary that contributed massively to the art history of Belgium, making the new Brussels Airlines Livery a depiction of Belgium culture which is set to stay until 2024.

For the Aircraft Pieter Bruegel’s artwork was recreated by artists Jos De Gruyter and Harold Thys using ten different pieces of artwork. The ten artworks used include Netherlandish Proverbs, The Fight between Carnival and Lent, Children’s Games, Two Monkeys, Landscape with the flight to Egypt, The Hunters in the Snow, The Harvesters, Massacre of the Innocents, The Land of Cockaigne and Conversation of Paul.

BCT Support BA with 100 Year Heritage Livery

BCT Aviation Maintenance is proud to announce that we are providing engineering support on the British Airways (BA) new Heritage Livery Designs to celebrate 100 years of British Airways.

On the 25thof August, this British Carrier will have been in operation for 100 years, to Commemorate this Achievement BA will be marking this Special Occasion by repainting a select few of its aircraft fleet in Liveries from key points in the company’s long history.

BCT Aviation Maintenance have partnered with British Airways since 2017 on this top secret project and is proud to be a part of such a momentous occasion.

To fulfil the requirements of this project, BCT Aviation Maintenance also succeeded in the challenge of gaining B747 Approval once again exclusively for this project.

So far there has been three of the heritage livery designs released in the series and BCT Aviation Maintenance have carried out the maintenance and engineering for all three. The first of the retro livery designs was the B747 original BOAC livery, this was originally used between 1964 and 1974, the new repaint is set to stay until 2023.

The second of the designs was applied to an Airbus A319, to resemble British European Airways (BEA) livery introduced between 1959 and 1968. The third Design in the series has been allocated to another B747 in the Landor Scheme livery which was originally used between 1984 and 1997.

Stansted Line (STN) NOW OPEN!

BCT Recently completed upgrades to it’s offices in Stansted where it will serve some of its most prestigious clients from the airport. The Line Station is now open for business, kicking off with its legacy Embraer customer in DUB – BA CityFlyer.

BCT Renews and adds B777 Support for Nigerian operator, Air Peace

BCT Aviation Maintenance continues to serve Nigerian Operator, Air Peace at Lagos (LOS) International Airport. As the key maintenance provider since its inception, BCT Aviation Maintenance has grown its operation in Lagos to include over 15 engineers taking care of the current fleet of B737 Classic and Dornier 328 aircraft.

The renewal of this contract is a strong indication and nod towards BCT’s ability to maintain on time schedules in an extremely challenging environment whilst educating and implementing safety as a core value in this fast growing aviation sector.

Kathmandu (KTM) Line Station Now Open!

BCT Aviation Maintenance is proud to announce its newest Line Maintenance Station at Kathmandu, Nepal.

The company has worked solidly with Nepal Airways over the past two years and continues to support it’s engineering department with experienced inputs for a safe and reliable operation.

The decision to open in Nepal was made last year, CEO Bob Brown of BCT Aviation Maintenance commented “This is a great opportunity which stimulates the local aviation economy as well as supplying international carriers, such as Turkish Airlines, with experienced and reliable Line Maintenance support from an EASA Part 145 Approved Maintenance Company. Our Approvals from various different countries along with our wide aircraft capability list will help airlines have dedicated transit support with engineers and quality they can rely on”.

BA Cityflyer Embraer Line Maintenance services launched at Dublin Airport
